The joys of growing your own

Growing your own could not be any fresher, tastes delicious and saves on food miles.  Even a few salad leaves and herbs are better than nothing and can be grown in pots if you have no garden.

The Joys of growing your own

What I love about growing your own, is that nothing, nothing, nothing, then POW something, it might not be much to start with but within a few weeks we are ready to harvest.  I know that waiting is hard, but they end up being like your baby, they are such tiny things to start with and then they are crawling over everything and getting out of control and requiring some taming.

It is so much more satisfying to quickly dash outside and pick some homegrown lettuce for that extra salad when unexpected friends pop over for dinner.  Or, when you just can’t get out of the house, when your child is ill and the broccoli in fridge looks like it has legs and is about to start running, ahhh the saving grace, my veggies outside.  Yes, I do have to sometimes supplement my crop with store bought produce-who am I kidding.

Since having our son Jack, I have really started to think about what we are putting in our mouths and where it comes from. Why does our garlic come from China and why am I buying produce from the Stupidmarket (as I like to call it) which is all wrapped in plastic, picked before it is ripe and stored in a cool room for months on end?

And, you know what, it is just so much nicer being outside with our son, tending to our patch and providing him with an incredible hands-on learning tool.

Here’s a pic of our son enjoying our garden.
